JOHANNESBURG - The South African Communist Party (SACP) in KwaZulu-Natal says its Secretary Themba Mthembu will tell the African National Congress (ANC) this morning whether he will take up the post of Agricultural MEC after the party announced his appointment yesterday.

Mthembu appeared to come close to rejecting the appointment after strongly criticising the provincial ANC for forcing Senzo Mchunu to resign as premier.

Just two weeks ago, Mthembu, while speaking as KwaZulu-Natal SACP provincial secretary, said that the provincial ANC had lied to them and that their behaviour was abusive.

Now that same party wants to appoint him as an MEC.

But the KwaZulu-Natal ANC's Mdumiseni Ntuli says Mthembu must take the post.

"When you join the ANC you subject yourself to the authority of the organisation and you avail yourself at the disposal of the movement for whatever responsibility it deems appropriate to you."

It's also emerged Mthembu was not told about the appointment before it was announced.

Mthembu is due to tell the ANC of his final decision at 9am this morning, just as the new MECs are supposed to be sworn into office.
