[LISTEN] Stats SA's household survey shows growing dependence on the state

| The latest survey by Stats SA has revealed that more people continue to rely on state coffers as the percentage of individuals that benefited from social grants increased from 12,7% in 2003 to 30,1% in 2015.

JOHANNESBURG - An increasing number of South African households rely on social grants to get by, according to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).

Stats SA Deputy Director-General Kefiloe Masiteng says that the economic down-turn in the country has affected the rate of social development, and thus the level of state dependency.
