12-year-old rape victim’s grandmother speaks out
The Atlantis woman says her family has been scarred after the 12-year-old boy was raped last Saturday.
CAPE TOWN - The grandmother of a 12-year-old rape survivor says the incident has scarred the whole family.
The boy's alleged rapist, a 24-year old man, made a brief appearance in court this morning.
He's expected back in the dock next week for a formal bail application.
The grandmother says the suspect lured her grandson with the prospect of money for helping him with a heavy load.
She says once they reached a dense overgrown bush, he then grabbed him and took him to a secluded spot near a dam.
"When he bent over he hit him with a stick over his head and ear. Then he was unconscious, when he regained consciousness, he was busy committing the deed."
The distraught grandmother says the suspect tried to kill her grandson that day.
"Afterwards, he closed his nose and mouth and he passed out a second time. When he came to a third time, he choked him."
When the boy eventually regained consciousness again, the suspect was gone and he used the opportunity to find help.
