JOHANNESBURG - News24 has confirmed that Ferial Haffajee is resigning as the editor of the _City Press _newspaper.

Haffajee has been in charge of the paper since 2009.

The company says she will leave the post at the end of July.

Wits University journalism professor Franz Kruger says it's a loss to South African journalism.

"She's sometimes described as a rock star editor. Certainly her voice and her profile has been striking, she particularly built the profile of the paper and there was a very strong redesign in the early days. There has been great emphasis on breaking important stories."
