JOHANNESBURG - South African Football Association (Safa) technical director Neil Tovey has shared his memories of former Bafana Bafana coach Ted 'The Professor' Dumitru at a memorial service for the 76-year-old at the Ellis Park Arena.

Former players and coaches have gathered to pay their respects.

Dumitru died a week ago after suffering a heart attack at the Eastgate Shopping Mall.

Tovey has remembered Dumitru as a man with a passion for developing coaches in South Africa.

The former Bafana captain worked with the Romanian in establishing a school of excellence.

Tovey says the Dumitru may have been a good coach, but he was a better mentor.

"There was a call for him to help develop the coaches in this country, and that's where he really found his niche."

Meanwhile, former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan says Dumitru was a man with a great sense humour.

Khan worked with 76-year-old in the early 2000s, when Chiefs won back-to-back league titles, and was also among the group of coaches who set up the school of excellence.

He says Dumitru made football easy.

"He was a very humorous person who made football easy and very enjoyable. You would always want to come back and learn more from him, because it was like doing something which you had a lot of fun doing."

Dumitru leaves behind a daughter, living in the United States, and his partner, Lucy Mooi.
