IEC warns political parties to meet today’s candidate deadline
The IEC says if parties don’t submit their candidate lists by 5pm, they won't be in the running for the polls.
CAPE TOWN - The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says if political parties have not submitted their candidate lists by now [5pm], they won't be in the running for the August polls.
Today is D-day for parties to submit their lists to the commission for the local government elections.
For the first time, they could do it electronically.
IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela says the online system is a first for the continent.
"We are excited about the innovation, we believe once the innovation has worked well for our country, we [will be] able to share it with sister electoral management bodies."
And, she says, it has made things at head office a little easier.
"We have glitches here and there but we are managing them so it really has reduced the tension that comes with people who try to rush through the door for the 5pm deadline."
Information will be verified before the commission publishes the final list of parties and candidates contesting the elections.
