57,000 mine workers face job cuts
NUM says South Africa has seen its highest number of job losses since 2013.
He says workers in the transport, wholesale and retail sectors are also hard hit.
Matosa was speaking on the first day of the party's central committee meeting today, where he says the union has a responsibility to defend existing jobs.

The union boss says retrenchments in the mining sector must be guarded against.
"People that have to be retrenched in the mining industry; if that happens, comrades, that tells you that the NUM will be left terribly injured."
He says this year, South Africa has seen its highest number of job losses since 2013.
"The South African economy dropped 118,397 jobs in February 2016."
Matosa has called on union leaders and representatives to properly defend workers whose livelihoods may be at risk.
