JOHANNESBURG - Wits University has appealed to anyone with information on what appears to have been a planned arson attack on one of its buildings in Braamfontein, to come forward.

The university says two unknown people wearing balaclavas gained entry into its library through a window at the weekend, with at least three gas cylinders.

There's still no clarity on whether the pair are Wits students and the institution has since beefed up its security.

University spokesperson Shirona Patel says, "The safety and security of our staff, students and property remains paramount. Additional security has been deployed at strategic points at our campuses."

Two months ago, a lecture hall was set alight at Wits during a protest by students.

At the same time, the Sanlam Auditorium at the University of Johannesburg was torched two weeks ago, with damages estimated at around R100 million.
