Over 280 arrested in anti-gangsterism operations in PE
‘Operation Lockdown’ has resulted in the murder conviction of a 24-year-old man as well.
CAPE TOWN - Police say more than 280 people have been arrested in anti-gangsterism operations in Port Elizabeth's northern areas in the last three months.
'Operation Lockdown' resulted in the arrest of seven people, including a murder suspect in Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp this week.
The anti-crime initiative has also been credited for a murder conviction.
Yesterday, 24-year-old Marcus Malgas was found guilty of murder, eight attempted murders and the possession of an illegal firearm.
He was arrested in December after firing into a vehicle, killing one person and wounding eight others, including five children.
The police's Sandra Janse van Rensburg says information from communities led to the successes.
"The police would like to encourage them to continue to do so. All information submitted anonymously will be treated as confidential."
Malgas will be sentenced on Tuesday.
