CAPE TOWN - A Claremont teacher has been forced to take leave while he stands accused of raping a 17-year-old learner.

The 52-year-old Science teacher was granted bail of R2,000 in the Wynberg Magistrates Court yesterday.

He handed himself over to police earlier this week.

The man has been granted bail on condition that he makes no direct or indirect contact with his accuser.

The state says the 17-year-old learner, who attends an all-girls school, where the accused is a teacher, is severely traumatised.

The man is a father of two and is still employed by the private school.

The case has been postponed to June, to allow the state time to consult with the complainant.
