Home Affairs Dept hopes arrests of 50 at Beitbridge will deter criminals
The department says 28 of those arrested are Home Affairs officials.
JOHANNESBURG - The Home Affairs Department says it hopes the arrests of more than 50 people for fraud and corruption at the Beitbridge border post in Musina, Limpopo will send a strong message to other perpetrators.
The suspects were apprehended during a crime prevention operation carried out by the department and the Hawks on Thursday.
Twenty-eight of those arrested are home affairs officials.
Spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete said, "A great deal of home affairs officials are good, responsible and ethical for their work but there are just a few who continue to engage in short benefits and they are going to pay a heavy price."
Minister Malusi Gigaba has applauded the arrests, saying it demonstrates that his department is serious about fighting illegal activities.
