Reporting rape incidents ‘still a challenge for many schools’
The GDE is working on a policy that governs how schools react should they be faced with sexual assault cases.
Lesufi says his department is working on a draft policy that will govern how schools react should they be faced with sexual assault cases.
He says while regulations do exist, they are aimed more at high school pupils.
Last year, two rape cases involving primary school children were reported where young girls were assaulted, allegedly by their peers.
Lesufi says the cases have highlighted the need for a clear framework on how to report such matters.
"The main challenge is the point of reporting. You report the crime at school. Did they institute a disciplinary, as this is a criminal? But then, you have to allow police to look at the entire process and what happens to the learner within the school premises."
