JOHANNESBURG - President Jacob Zuma says the signing of today's land claim agreement is a significant step in reversing the legacy of apartheid.

Zuma is speaking at the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga, where families displaced after the 1930s will receive a R110,000 payout.

About 318,000 hectares of land was taken from hundreds of communities at the Kruger National Park by the government.

A total of 17 claims were lodged against the park by locals in 1998.

Zuma says this claim will serve as a lesson for other similar cases going forward.

"It is important for all of us to learn from this process that is ending today with the signing of the agreement. We did not plan enough for the benefits to be meaningful and to benefit particularly the claimants."
