CAPE TOWN - Food inflation has spiked notably in the past six months.

The latest data from Statistics South Africa shows the cost of food increased by 9.8 percent in March from a year earlier.

Cost of food in South Africa increased by 11 percent in April of 2016, over the same month in the previous year.

Food inflation in South Africa averaged at 6.39 percent from 2009 until 2016, reaching an all-time high of 15.75 percent in January of 2009 and a record low of 0.73 percent in June of 2010.

A constellation of issues is to blame for the rising costs, the immediate one being the sluggish economy…
