PRETORIA - Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane says the Hawks should be given space to conduct their investigations and people should refrain from conducting trials through the media.

He was responding to questions about weekend reports that the Hawks would soon arrest Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan on charges relating to an investigation unit at South African Revenue Services (Sars).

Phahlane was speaking at an Institute for Security Studies seminar on how to improve policing.

He says everyone should refrain from commenting on the matter, which is under investigation, and not conduct a trial through the media.

The acting commissioner says detectives should be left to do their work.

Gordhan said in a statement this week that the investigations by the Sars unit were all legal.
