JOHANNESBURG - It's difficult to conclusively determine the size of South Africa's informal sector, though it contributes a great deal to the economy.

Market expert at the Gordon Institute of Business Science, Dr Tashmia Ismail, says there's no consensus on the estimated statistics of the sector.

She says researchers are cautious about figures in the informal sector, as the nature of the business suggests that it cannot be properly measured.
