CAPE TOWN - The Department of Energy has launched an efficiency label for household appliances this afternoon.

The announcement was made at the African Utility week being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The campaign is a collaborative effort from the Departments of Energy, Public Works and Trade and Industry, with assistance from the Danish government and the United Nation.

A label indicating levels of consumption will soon be applied to some household appliances.

Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson says she hopes this will inspire an energy savings culture among South Africans.

Danish Ambassador Rask Tygesson says they will be sharing knowledge.

"Our GDP has been growing for many years, our energy has sometimes been going down and it is that curve that we would like to see."

The label will only be placed on appliances meeting certain standards.

An educational campaign will help citizens understand the system.
