[LISTEN] ‘Sars rogue unit was Zuma’s idea’

Editor Ranjeni Munusamy says President Jacob Zuma may be implicated in the Hawks, Gordhan spy unit case.

JOHANNESBURG - Daily Maverick editor Ranjeni Munusamy explains that President Jacob Zuma could be implicated in the case against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

The editor says past and present-day intelligence officials are 'puzzled' by these recent developments, as they understand the idea of developing an investigative unit in the South African Revenue Service (Sars) came from Zuma, who was deputy president at the time of the 2001 meeting at the intelligence academy in Mahikeng.

The Hawks have reportedly handed over a docket to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to prosecute Gordhan and eight others over their involvement in the Sars rogue spy unit saga.

Munusamy says it remains unclear what charges will be levelled against the minister, should he be arrested.
