JOHANNESBURG - An investigation is underway after last night's building collapse in Actonville, east of Johannesburg, which left one person dead and another critically injured.

Eyewitnesses say the two men had been leaning over a wall on the first floor of a residential building when it collapsed.

One resident said for several months now, the local council has failed to respond to various calls from the community to demolish the dilapidated block of flats.

"My mother is one of the community activists, so she had to come see what's happening. She has actually being trying to sort out the maintenance of the flats as many people had been complaining to the council and stuff to fix up the flats but there hasn't been any progress."
