CAPE TOWN - The proud father of one of South Africa's champion maths whiz kids says he often runs to his son for help.

Nicholas Kroon, aged 17, is part of the six-member team who will be representing the country at the International Maths Olympiad in Hong Kong in July.

Although Nicholas attends St Andrews College in the Eastern Cape, he was born in Cape Town, just like all the other members of the team.

Simon Kroon, a maths tutor, says his son's mathematical prowess never ceases to amaze him.

"It's very humbling because I'm the maths teacher in our house, but if I get stuck with something, I go to him for help. So the roles have been reversed."
