Jobless Lily Mine workers may now apply for severance packages
Trade union Solidarity says the now unemployed workers will receive outstanding salaries.
JOHANNESBURG - Trade union Solidarity says Lily Mine workers can now apply for voluntary severance packages, as the mine remains closed.
Solidarity says the now unemployed workers will receive outstanding salaries.
The union says should employees be granted severance packages, they will only be paid out next year.
Solidarity's Francois Redelinghuys says employees will also have access to their pensions.
"Unfortunately in the case of the Lily Mine, the mine doesn't have any finances available at this stage - as we already know."
Employees will be paid one week for every year of service.
"We have already handed out some food parcels to all the workers from Solidarity's Helping Hand to try and take care of the workers."
The union is currently in talks with management regarding the recent unpaid salaries.
