Jordaan emotional at community meeting in crime-laden Helenvale
Residents say 7de Laan in PE has become a 'no-go-zone' because of regular gang shootings.
CAPE TOWN - Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Danny Jordaan has come face-to-face with victims of crime in one of Port Elizabeth's most dangerous areas.
Jordaan, who has been criticised of being a 'part-time mayor' because of his responsibilities at the South African Football Association (Safa) also became emotional at the meeting held in Helenvale last night.
He was in an area called 7de Laan which among local has almost become a no-go-zone because of almost daily gang shootings.
The area is one of Port Elizabeth's most dangerous neighbourhoods.
Residents say on some days they have to call on police to help escort their children to school.
Mayor Jordaan admitted some residents live in an unacceptable situation.
He promised sobbing residents he'll ensure authorities, including the police, are closely monitored to change the current state of affairs in 7de Laan.
