Independent Newspapers, former 'Cape Times' editor dispute continues

CAPE TOWN - The battle between Independent Newspapers and former Cape Times editor Alide Dasnois continues.

Dasnois's lawyers have indicated they'll report the media house to the Press Ombudsman over its coverage of, and comments on, a settlement agreement in the Labour Court.

On Monday, a judgment was read outlining Dasnois' settlement with the Independent Media Group following a nearly three-year legal battle.

A statement from lawyers for Dasnois's claims Independent Newspaper's coverage of the settlement was in breach of the code for members of the Press Council.

Lawyers point out that in the Labour Court settlement the group retracts all allegations of racism against her.

The statement then claims this did not stop the media house from repeating the insults in the very newspaper at the centre of the matter.

Lawyers say this shows a lack of respect for the court process.

The statement ends by highlighting that The Code for members of the Press Council states that allowing commercial, political, personal or other non-professional considerations to influence or slant reporting constitutes serious misconduct on the part of a news group.

Meanwhile, Independent Media's chairman Iqbal Survè says he's not worried about Dasnois' claims.

He he doesn't know what Dasnois is insinuating and says she's more than welcome to lodge a complaint.

"I have no idea what Miss Dasnois is saying. At the end of the day, Independent Media group subscribes to the Press Code. She is more than welcome, if she feels in any way that any of our titles may have misrepresented her point of view, to contact the Press Ombudsman."
