MDC slams govt’s decision to print Zim dollars
The party says the notes will be nothing more than sanitized newsprint.
JOHANNESBURG - Zimbabwe's opposition MDC has slammed the government's decision to soon start printing its own banknotes.
As Zimbabweans fear a return to the Zim dollar era, the party says the notes will be nothing more than sanitized newsprint.
The opposition is clearly not buying the central bank governor's argument that the new notes are an export incentive facility.
Instead the MDC says the decision to start printing them will plunge the country into instability and chaos.
Spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka says this will hit the informal sector particularly hard.
Central bank chief John Mangudya has tried to calm the market since his announcement last Wednesday triggered fears of a return to the Zimbabwe dollar era of less than a decade ago.
Tamborinyoka says Zimbabweans haven't forgotten the time when they were poor quintillionaires.
