JOHANNESBURG - Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa says rhino poaching has decreased nationally but the number of attacks on rhino in the Kruger National Park has increased.

Molewa has reported on the progress made through the integrated strategic management approach.

The minister was joined by the head of the Hawks Mthandazo Berning Ntlemeza, Justice Minister Michael Masutha, and Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula at a briefing this morning.

Molewa started the media briefing by calling for a moment of silence for San Parks ranger Enos Mabila who was killed at the Kruger National Park and a second ranger wounded in the line of duty.

She says many men and women die while trying to protect rhino.

But the environmental affairs minister adds that government interventions are showing positive results.

"In the first four months of 2016 363 rhino were poached countrywide and during the same period last year that number was 404."

But she says the numbers have increased in the Kruger National Park sitting at 1,038 rhino attacked in the first four months of this year.
