JOHANNESBURG - The Public Protector's office has confirmed reports that a Western Cape gang boss has allegedly been contracted to orchestrate Thuli Madonsela' s murder.

According to the Sunday Times newspaper and Madonsela's office, she received a text message last month, alerting her to the plot.

The office says the message from an informant, said her murder would be made to seem like she died of natural causes, and not in a car accident as reported by the Sunday Times.

Madonsela is apparently living in fear after receiving a tip off that a prominent Western Cape gang boss has been paid R740,000 to orchestrate her murder.

She has butted heads with a number of people during her seven years in office mostly over the outcomes of her reports.

The Public Protector's spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi says she is not taking the threat to her life lightly.

"She is taking it very seriously and that is why she alerted the VIP protection unit formally with a letter."

COPE CALLS ON SA TO DEFEND MADONSELA

The Congress of the People (Cope) has called on South Africans to defend Public Protector Thuli Madonsela following reports that her life is in danger.

Cope's Dennis Bloem says South Africans must protest and voice their deep anger at the threats on Madonsela's life.

"We can never condone these criminal activities and rogue elements wanting to take the life of Advocate Thuli Madonsela."
