Teaching disrupted as Lily Mine workers protest
Workers have blocked roads and have shut down classrooms in Mpumalanga as well.
JOHANNESBURG - While schooling in Vuwani in Limpopo has come to a complete halt today, protesters have shut down classrooms in Mpumalanga as well.
Angry Lily Mine workers have blocked roads in the Barberton community.
They're demanding that their three colleagues, who remain trapped underground, be brought to the surface.
The police's Gerald Sedibe says pupils en route to school were intimidated this morning.
"The situation became tense and they went around blocking the road. The schools around the area are closed because learners were prevented from going to school."
A container with the three workers plunged into a massive hole caused by a rock fall at the Barberton operation in February.
The rescue operation cannot continue due to safety reasons.
