JOHANNESBURG - Jace Naidoo, President of Swimming South Africa, has told EWNSport developing young female swimmers has been challenging.

Team SA finds itself in an embarrassing situation where it won't have any female swimmers representing South Africa at the upcoming Rio Olympics.

Naidoo says there is talent coming through.

"Tatjana Schoenmaker made the qualifying time earlier the year at one of our Grand Prix events but then missed it at 1/100th of a second at the National Championships. We've also had an unfortunate run with Karen Prinsloo who hadn't been well since just before Commonwealth."

Naidoo says Swimming SA is planning for the future.

"What we've done over the past four years is put a lot of effort into some of the younger women and look at what programs will yield the best results. It's been a struggle to keep women swimming competitively after they finish school."

The Rio Games get underway on 5 August.
