CAPE TOWN - A six-year-old Athlone child has been laid to rest after being gunned down in the area during suspected gang violence.

Little Saadiqah Lippert succumbed to her wounds in hospital after she was shot while playing outside on Monday afternoon.

Community leader Hanif Loonat attended her funeral yesterday.

"It reminds me that I also have grandchildren and children, my neighbours have kids and is this what's going to happen to them? This has become a concern. We can't say it's not our child and it's part of life - it's not part of life."

In January, a 10-year-old boy died after being hit by a stray bullet during a gang shooting.

In a separate incident the following month, a 12-year-old girl was gunned down in a suspected gang shooting.

It's alleged the girl was caught in the crossfire between two rival gangs while walking to the local arcade with a friend.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed the arrest of two men in connection with the murder of the six-year-old girl.

TEACHER, LEARNERS MOURN

The slain six-year-old girl's teacher Aneesah Mansura has described her as a jovial and hard-working learner.

It might seem like a normal day at Garlandale Primary School, but Mansura says they are still reeling at the news of her death.

Mansura says many of the learners in her class are still asking her why the little one was killed.

Candles will be lit and pictures of Saadiqah will be placed near the school's reception area today.
