CAPE TOWN - The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is continuing to give Members Parliament (MPs) who doze off during sittings of Parliament a rude awakening.

The party's MPs have made a point of loudly drawing attention to lawmakers caught snoozing during debates.

EFF leader Julius Malema and his red berets have been using the issue to gain political mileage.

Malema told supporters at his party's recent elections manifesto launch in Soweto that before the EFF arrived in Parliament, many politicians only woke up on payday.

Debate on the Human Settlements Department's budget was well underway yesterday when the EFF's Nazier Paulsen called attention to a slumbering African National Congress (ANC) MP.

"Before we continue, can you just wake that sleepist staff over there. She's sleeping there. You must wake her. She's sleeping on taxpayers' money. Look at her, you must wake her up!"

The dozing MP was roused by her colleague and took a swig of water to revive herself.

Last month EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi accused International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana Mashabane of sleeping on the job during a rowdy debate on President Jacob Zuma's impeachment.
