The private 'NewsDay' paper says the haul is worth around one million US dollars.

HARARE - A report from eastern Zimbabwe says two Malawi truck drivers have been arrested for trying to smuggle nearly a ton of marijuana into the country.

The truck was en route to South Africa with the contraband hidden beneath more than a thousand sacks of wheat bran.

The private NewsDay paper says the haul is worth around US$1 million.

Police detectives swooped on the truck while it was at a border post near Mutare with a cargo of wheat bran last Thursday.

The vehicle is South African-owned and the drivers, both Malawians, are due to go on trial next week for unlawful drug possession.

This marijuana haul is one of the biggest in recent years; in 2014 nearly half a ton was seized in Bulawayo.

The drug had been smuggled in from Cape Town.
