CAPE TOWN - Residents of a Cape Town informal settlement called Democracy have described it as a horrible place to live.

Some people who've lived there for more than a decade say they've had to put up with the horrid smell of blocked drains and piles of uncollected rubbish.

Piles of rubbish and pools of muddy water are commonplace at Democracy and residents say they're fed up.

"This is horrible, just horrible," said a resident.

People have threatened to boycott this year's local government elections.

They are doubtful voting will bring about any meaningful change to their lives.

The City of Cape Town was not available for comment.
