JOHANNESBURG - Two mineworkers have been killed following an earth tremor at the Savuka Gold Mine in Carletonville.

Operations were suspended after yesterday's 3.5 magnitude tremor.

Authorities say experts will only go down the shaft to assess the impact and damage once the mine has declared safe.

Anglo Gold's Stewart Bailey has sent condolences to the affected families.

"There's no indication that it's occurring related to mining activities. We do monitor activities on an ongoing basis. But as you'll remember from 2014 we had a large earthquake out in the Vaal River region roughly twice as severe, so these things do happen."
