Free State cop goes the extra mile for cancer
Deon van der Merwe walked from Bloem to Cape Town to raise R40,000, but he wants to do more.
JOHANNESBURG - A Free State police officer, who raised R40,000 for cancer by walking from Bloemfontein to Cape Town, says he now intends reaching a new target of R100,000.
Deon van der Merwe finally reached Cape Town yesterday.
The walk took him one month at an average of 37 kilometres per day.
He decided to undertake the mammoth task after his wife, Jolene, died of cancer.
But Van der Merwe now says it's no longer only about walking for her, and he wants to raise cancer awareness and funds by continuing his exhausting journey.
