CAPE TOWN - A surf-skier this morning had a close shave in Plettenberg Bay following an encounter with a shark.

The man was part of a group of surf-skiers when his vessel was pushed from behind by a shark, causing him to fall into the sea.

He managed to climb back into his surf-ski but it then started sinking. The shark had bitten the vessel.

The man then held onto a fellow-paddlers surf-ski.

The National Sea Rescue Institute's Craig Lambinon says it's not surprising that this incident took place as this is the time for sharks to migrate.

"It's not well known that at this time of the year sharks do migrate closer inshore as part of their natural feeding habits. We 're urging the public to be cautious and aware of this phenomenon."
