IRR: Empowerment can help eradicate racism
The institute says campaigns against racism create awareness but aren’t the ultimate solution.
CAPE TOWN - The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) says economic empowerment can help eradicated racism.
Commenting on research network Afrobarometer's report on South Africa's progress since 1994, the institute says campaigns against racism do create awareness but they aren't the ultimate solution.
A survey of 2,400 respondents, including people of other nationalities, shows many still believe courts and landlords discriminate against certain groups, based on race.
The research suggests there is still a need for campaigns to combat racism and other forms of discrimination.
But the IRR's Mienke Steytler says empowerment is the answer.
The survey shows South Africans who took part in the study are generally tolerant, with 92 percent saying they don't mind living with neighbours from different racial groups.
