JOHANNESBURG - Police have confirmed one person has been killed and four others have been wounded in a taxi shootout in Midrand.

Shots were fired on the corner of Allandale and Old Pretoria Road during peak hour traffic on Tuesday evening in what appears to have been a dispute over taxi routes.

The victims are all taxi owners from Ivory Park who were standing on the side of road when they were attacked.

The police's Mack Mngomezulu said, "Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect who fled the scene after he shot and killed one of the taxi owners [from] Ivory Park. He also wounded for owners who were rushed to hospital."

Police say preliminary investigations suggest the shootout is linked to an ongoing dispute over routes in Ivory Park.

Netcare911's Athlenda Mathe says paramedics took the men to local hospitals.

"When we arrived one man had already died due to the gunshot wound he sustained. Four other people believed to be commuters also sustained wounds were stabilised on scene then transported to various hospitals."
