UCT issues fraudster alert to its suppliers
The fraudsters claim to be from UCT and then send fraudulent purchase orders to vendors.
CAPE TOWN - University of Cape Town (UCT) has issued a warning to its vendors after the university received reports of fraudulent incidents targeting some of these suppliers.
The matter is now the subject of a police investigation.
The fraudsters will apparently claim to be from UCT and then send fraudulent purchase orders to vendors.
the university's Elijah Majola says once payment is made to a specific supplier as instructed by the fraudsters, the goods are never delivered to the vendors.
"The vendor is requested to buy material at a specific supplier who then requests the vendor to deposit some amount into some bank account. Apparently some vendors have already paid big amounts without receiving any material from the supplier."
Majola adds UCT is assisting police in their investigation.
"We are saying vendors need to be vigilant, but while we are passing that message on we are saying the university is taking steps to assist the police investigation on this matter."
