JOHANNESBURG - Police have warned South Africans about a scam which makes people believe that they have unpaid traffic fines.

A text message is sent to victims where they are told to contact someone known as 'Constable Baloyi'.

They are then expected to deposit money to a certain bank account for their case to be closed.

The police's Hangwani Mulaudzi says, "Subsequent investigations led us to believe that it was a countrywide scam. We managed to pick up that the same modus operandi used in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, North West and Limpopo."
