JOHANNESBURG - As he spends today with his family in KwaZulu-Natal, President Jacob Zuma says his birthday wish is to see South Africa become a better place for all.

Zuma celebrates his 74th birthday today.

The occasion comes on the back of a difficult week for Zuma, with a damning Constitutional Court ruling against him, a failed impeachment attempt in Parliament and growing calls for him step down.

Quoting Zuma, the presidency's Bongani Majola said, "I wish for our country to continue working together to address our common challenges, particularly in this difficult economic climate of joblessness; rising fuel and food prices and high levels of poverty and inequality. It is only through our unity as South Africans that we will be able to overcome the current challenges and build a prosperous South Africa."

Meanwhile, some South Africans took to Twitter to wish the president a happy birthday, while others criticised his leadership.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRESIDENT ZUMA

@PresidencyZA more fulfilling that a R263 million house c/o South Africa's poor??? "wishes President Zuma a happy fulfilling birthday"

Happy birthday to President Zuma who lacks quality leadership style & honesty, he has a serious problem of thinking logically & sensible.

Some people are outraged that it's President Zuma's birthday today.
