CAPE TOWN - The mental state of a man accused of the rape and murder of 22-year-old Sulnita Mahno in Bredasdorp will be scrutinised when he returns to court next month.

Yesterday, it emerged Delwigo Ward is medically fit to stand trial despite a stint at a Cape Town mental health facility in October.

He was arrested a day after Mahno's body was discovered at a Limeworks factory early this month.

Ward's family admitted him to the Stikland Psychiatric Hospital in October following an incident of domestic violence.

He was there for a month before being released on medication.

During his next court appearance, the state is expected to provide a report detailing his medical evaluation.

Community members who gathered at the courthouse yesterday hope Ward's alleged confession and an eyewitness' testimony will result in a swift trial.
