JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Education in Gauteng has suspended its online registration process for grade one and eight pupils until Wednesday.

The department says it's had to shut down the system because of an overwhelming number of applicants trying to access the website.

Parents have been queuing online throughout the day to register their children for next year.

The department's Oupa Bodibe says, "We have around 600 visitors per second so we are going to increase our capacity and will bring the system back online Wednesday, but we appeal to parents not to panic because the registration period will not affect your queue at a school."

Listen: 'We apologise to our people,' says Oupa Bodibe from Gauteng education department
