Can SA consumers keep up with rising food prices?
Consumers have been warned the price of chicken, pork & red meat could more than double soon.
CAPE TOWN - The African Farmers Association has warned the price of chicken, pork and red meat could more than double in coming months.
The association adds the price of maize could rise to more than R5,000 per tonne by winter.
Skyrocketing fuel prices and the drought are pushing up the cost of basic foodstuffs.
Mahanjana says many farmers, who are buckling under the pressure of escalating maize prices, are forced to look at other options, like either cutting staff or closing up shop.
"And that is going to affect food security in South Africa very, very severely."
He says the recent rains have not made any significant impact.
Mahanjana has asked government to intervene by means of increased drought relief subsidies to prevent what he's called a disaster in the agriculture industry.
