JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the life imprisonment sentence handed down to a former police officer for raping his own daughter who was nine-years-old at the time.

The former Krugersdorp police officer, who cannot be named to protect the child's identity, was sentenced on Wednesday after being convicted of repeatedly raping his daughter at home between 2009 and 2010.

The NPA says the accused pleaded not guilty and disputed every aspect of the child's testimony, leading to the five year long trial and the victim suffering severe depression and a number of suicide attempts.

The NPA's Phindi Louw said, "The victim has had several consultations and assessments with relevant professionals, as well as a victim impact report that played an important role in assisting the court to determine the appropriate sentence to impose the accused."
