Police ministry: Malema pulled over for ‘illegal’ blue lights
EFF leader Julius Malema claims he was harassed by police officers in Sandton, a claim the ministry denies.
JOHANNESBURG - The police ministry says Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema was pulled over by officers in Sandton o n Sunday night because his vehicle had been fitted illegally with blue lights.
The EFF commander in chief has, however, given a different account of events, saying he was harassed by at least ten police officers who told them they made a mistake.
Malema also claims police pointed firearms at him, shortly before releasing him.
The party says it's decided not to lay charges against the police, claiming the matter won't be taken seriously.
Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko's spokesperson Musa Zondi says, "The Johannesburg Metro Police Officers, who were later joined by South African Police Service officers, were at all times professional - especially when they realised who they were dealing with."
