Madonsela reiterates she was never 'confused' about her powers
During the impeachment debate she took to Twitter saying she’s never been confused about her powers.
CAPE TOWN - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has reiterated to Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Justice Portfolio Committee that she has never been confused about her powers.
She was addressing the committee two days after opposition parties pushed for President Jacob Zuma's impeachment over his handling of her Nkandla investigation report.
The Constitutional Court last week found Zuma failed to uphold, defend and respect the constitution by not complying with Madonsela's directives.
Madonsela has today re-affirmed her view about her powers - after taking to Twitter earlier this week.
I've never been confused about powers of @PublicProtector. To suggest otherwise & selectively quote from a repudiated document is dishonest— Adv Thuli Madonsela (@ThuliMadonsela3) April 5, 2016
During the impeachment debate on Tuesday, Deputy Justice Minister John Jeffrey claimed that even Madonsela had doubts about her powers before last month's landmark judgment.
When Economic Freedom Fighters MP Floyd Shivambu asked if this was true, Madonsela replied there was never confusion.
"But the person who presented a distorted view in Parliament knows the truth and that person is someone we've debated the powers with in this committee. The first the issue of powers became a hot potato, which we didn't think it was, it was that person and another member of this committee that raised it with me. What was our response in 2011 already? It was to make it the subject of discourse in a good governance conference."
Madonsela appeared in Parliament today for the first time since the Constitutional Court handed down its ruling.
