CAPE TOWN - Hundreds of Metrorail workers affiliated with the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) are expected to go on strike from tomorrow in the Western Cape.

Metrorail says Satawu's grievances are based around the employment of fixed and contract workers.

The rail service's regional manager Richard Walker says Metrorail has put in place measures to mitigate the impact of the industrial action.

"From our side, we're putting contingency plans in place. We know there's no appetite within the organisation for a strike at the moment. This was demonstrated in their unlawful march when they basically only got about 80 employees to support."
