19-month-old child drowning victim to be laid to rest
The child drowned in an unused swimming pool at an illegal crèche in Bramley.
JOHANNESBURG - The funeral of a 19-month-old child will take place today after he drowned in an unused swimming pool at an illegal crèche in Bramley.
The child will be laid to rest at the Westpark Cemetery.
Owami Ndlovu died on Monday at the Rose Day Care Centre, an illegal crèche that the department says was taking care of children in a hazardous environment.
The boy drowned in an unused swimming pool containing rain water.
The Gauteng Social Development Department has urged parents to ensure that the crèches they send their children to are registered.
"The telltale signs would be if the daycare centre first and foremost does not advertise openly," said spokesperson Mbangwa Xaba.
Gauteng Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza has strongly urged community members to report illegal crèches to help prevent unnecessary deaths.
