CAPE TOWN - A Bredasdorp youth, accused of the rape and murder of a 22-year-old woman, will remain behind bars until his next court appearance next week.

Nineteen-year-old Delwigo Ward appeared briefly in the local magistrate's court yesterday.

He was arrested at the weekend, shortly after 22-year-old Sulnita Manho's body was found at a Limeworks factory in the area. She had been badly beaten.

Community leader Sam van Staden says the latest tragedy has left the Overberg community shocked.

"We are very upset and disappointed because we tried to avoid these things from happening but we failed so we had to go back to the drawing board to discuss and see where we failed and try to do things better."

This is not the first tragedy to stun the small Overberg town.

Last year, 14-year-old year old Elda Japhta was murdered by her 27-year-old boyfriend.

In the same year five-year-old Kayde Williams was also raped and murdered.

In 2013, the rape and killing of 17-year-old Anene Booysen made international headlines.

Since Booysen's murder, about R3 million has been spent on addressing Bredasdorp's social ills including violence, alcohol abuse and unemployment.
