JOHANNESBURG - The High Court in Pretoria has handed down life sentences to three people found guilty of murdering Gauteng top cop Tirhani Maswanganyi.

In 2013 Isaac Vele, Simon Msibi and Tshepo Mosai assaulted and suffocated Maswanganyi before dumping his body along a highway in Pretoria.

The men were members of the South African National Defence Force at the time of the murder.

The National Prosecuting Authority's Luvuyo Mfaku said, "As the State we firmly believe that the people targeting police officials must know they are facing prescribed minimum sentences of life imprisonment."
